/teqnologic.blogspot.com | Jakarta - The Australian government as of today, Thursday, December 8 2022, has officially issued a new warning for the trip of its citizens to Indonesia. This follows the ratification of the Draft Criminal Code (RKUHP) to become the Criminal Code, which among other things prohibits sex outside of marriage.
Earlier this week, the DPR passed a Criminal Code that will apply to Indonesians, foreigners living in the country. As for tourists, they will not be exempt from this decision.
Travel advice updated
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade today updated its advice on changing the rules.
"The Indonesian parliament has passed a revision of the penal code, which includes penalties for cohabitation and sex outside of marriage," said the update uploaded on the Smart Traveler website, as reported by news.com.au, Thursday, December 8, 2022.
Even so, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also noted that the revised new regulation in Indonesia would not take effect for the next 3 years.
The travel advice update came after a spokesperson for Australian Immigration, who called for travel advice so that everyone is aware of the new regulations in Indonesia.
“We need to make sure everyone is aware of this new law, because the last thing we want to see is people caught doing something that according to Indonesian law they are not allowed to do. Even when what they are doing is completely legal (in Australia)," said an Australian Immigration Spokesperson.

Furthermore, his party warned tourists from Australia to be careful when going to Indonesia, considering the new rules.
"Travellers beware because otherwise we could see some very unfortunate situations where we have to provide consular assistance to people who unknowingly or unintentionally do the wrong thing."
As is known, the new Criminal Code regulation in Indonesia stipulates that sex outside of marriage will be punished with one year in prison and cohabitation is punished with 6 months.
To put that into perspective, more than 1 million Australians visit Indonesia every year, the majority of whom fly to Bali for activities ranging from yoga to family holidays. The Australian government advises its citizens traveling to Indonesia to be very careful.
The US also highlighted the Criminal Code
Previously, the United States Government also highlighted the ratification of the Criminal Code into law by the DPR. One of the rules that is considered controversial is the prohibition against sex outside of marriage.
US Department of State spokesperson, Ned Price, said the US would closely monitor the revision of Indonesia's law which prohibits sex outside of marriage.
The US is concerned about how the changes could affect the exercise of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Price also said the law could affect US citizens visiting and living in Indonesia.
